NFP

NFP just reset the tape for rate hikes

NFP just reset the tape.

August payrolls printed +162K versus something like 55K expected. July got revised from a loss to +21K. Unemployment sat still at 4.1%. Wages did not explode, but they did not roll over either.

That is not a “soft landing is here, fade the dollar” report. It is a labor market that bounced after a messy summer and told the market the economy can still hire.

We just priced hike risk back in.

Going into the print, Waller talking disinflation had knocked September hike odds down toward a coin flip. The beat put a quarter-point move back on the table for the Sept 15–16 meeting. Two-year yields jumped. The market is no longer treating a hold as the base case.

Jobs alone do not force Warsh’s hand. Inflation still does. That is the point.

What has to change for hike pricing to come back out

Watch next week’s CPI. That is the real vote.

  • A clean downside miss on core — and confirmation that the 6-month inflation run-rate is actually turning — gives the hold camp cover. Then September can stay a skip and the market can start talking October/December instead of “they hike now.”
  • A hot or sticky print after this NFP, and the “we have work to do” line from Jackson Hole becomes the trade. Jobs strength plus no disinflation = hike odds go higher, not lower.

Also watch the mix, not just the headline: participation, hours, and whether leisure/gov bounce was one-off noise. One strong month after a weak July is not a new trend until the next print confirms it.

What will Warsh do?

He already told you the standard: he needs to be confident underlying inflation is moving to 2% clearly and at sufficient speed. Otherwise the Fed has work to do. He does not do forward guidance. He does not need this jobs number to hike. He needs inflation to refuse to cool.

If CPI cooperates, he can hold and still look serious. If it does not, this NFP just made sitting on his hands a lot harder.

Gold and rates will trade the inflation print, not the recap of today’s NFP. Position for that.
